Parcel import rules

Import restrictions for Indonesia 🇮🇩

Updated: July 2026

Customs rules can change. Before sending a parcel or travelling, check the current requirements on the customs authority's website. This material is for reference only and is not legal advice.

General information

These rules are useful both for people carrying items across the border themselves and for those sending a parcel with a fellow traveller. Every arriving passenger must fill out an electronic customs declaration (e-CD). This can be done at the airport, but to save time it is better to submit the form online within 48 hours before arrival.

You may import personal goods worth up to USD 500 per person (per arrival) duty-free. Anything above this value is subject to duty (usually 10% duty plus 11% VAT). Goods in quantities that clearly exceed personal needs may be treated as commercial and taxed.

✅ Allowed with restrictions

💰 Cash

Cash and payment instruments (in rupiah or foreign currency) totalling IDR 100,000,000 or more (about USD 6,500) must be declared to customs. Bringing in foreign banknotes totalling IDR 1,000,000,000 (1 billion) or more additionally requires permission from Bank Indonesia.

🍷 Tobacco and alcohol

You may import duty-free (alcohol — persons aged 21 and over, tobacco — 18 and over) one tobacco option:

  • 200 cigarettes; or
  • 25 cigars; or
  • 100 g of tobacco;

and up to 1 litre of alcoholic beverages. Tobacco types may not be combined with each other. Amounts of alcohol and tobacco above the limits are generally not subject to duty but are confiscated.

💻 Personal items and electronics

Personal items (clothing, gadgets) for your own use are imported within the USD 500 allowance. A large quantity of identical or packaged goods (for example, several new phones in boxes) will raise questions and may be taxed as commercial cargo.

Electronic devices — usually up to 2 per person. If you plan to use a phone you have brought with a local SIM card, IMEI registration will be required; foreign tourists staying in the country for less than 90 days are exempt from registration.

💊 Medicines

Personal medicines must be declared; it is advisable to have a doctor's prescription with the same name and dosage, issued in the name of the person carrying them. A supply of more than 30 days requires a prescription.

Important: Indonesia has extremely strict drug laws — up to the death penalty for trafficking. A number of common prescription medicines (for example, those with codeine, sleeping pills, ADHD medications and other psychotropics) can lead to arrest without a valid prescription and a doctor's letter. Check the composition of your medicines before travelling.

🍕 Food

Food (especially fresh vegetables, fruit, seeds, meat, as well as animals, fish and plants) is subject to quarantine control and requires permits from the quarantine service of both the exporting country and Indonesia. Everything you carry must be listed in the Information of Goods section when filling out the electronic declaration — otherwise you risk a fine or confiscation.

❌ Prohibited without special permits:

Narcotic and psychotropic substances, weapons and explosives, pornographic material and other items on the basic prohibited list.

Exporting culturally significant objects and antiques requires a permit from the relevant authority. Exporting Indonesian currency in amounts over IDR 100,000,000 requires permission from Bank Indonesia.

Responsibility for complying with customs rules and for the contents of the goods being moved lies with the person importing or exporting them. Before moving goods, check the current requirements in official sources.
