Import restrictions for Georgia 🇬🇪

General information

These rules are useful both for people carrying items across the border themselves and for those sending a parcel with a fellow traveller. Once every 30 days, an individual may import duty-free goods for personal use weighing up to 30 kg and worth up to GEL 3,000 (by air; the value threshold is lower for land or sea entry). If you have been outside Georgia for 6 months or more, the threshold is up to GEL 15,000.

A separate allowance applies to food (see the "Food" section). Used items are not counted towards the weight and value.

💰 Cash

Cash may be imported without a limit on the amount, but when bringing in GEL 30,000 or the equivalent in another currency, the amount must be declared. Banknotes, coins, securities and cheques are counted.

🍷 Tobacco and alcohol

One alcohol option is allowed duty-free (persons aged 18 and over):

• 4 L of wine and 16 L of beer; or
• 1 L of spirits (over 22%); or
• 2 L of alcoholic beverages up to 22%.

Tobacco products — one option or a combination weighing no more than 250 g in total:

• no more than 200 cigarettes;
• no more than 50 cigars;
• no more than 50 cigarillos;
• no more than 250 g of tobacco.

💻 Personal items

Footwear, clothing, beach accessories, electronics and other used personal items can be imported duty-free — they are not counted towards the weight and value.

It is recommended to carry one of each type of electronic device (1 phone, 1 laptop, 1 camera, etc.). Personal jewellery is not subject to duty, but valuable pieces should be declared.

🍕 Food

Separately from the general allowance, once every 30 days you may import duty-free food (vegetables, fruit, tea, coffee, pasta and bakery products, sugar, confectionery except chocolate, sausages and dairy products) with a total weight of up to 30 kg and worth up to GEL 500.

Caviar is separately limited to no more than 0.2 kg, and fish/seafood to no more than 5 kg.

💊 Medicines

Medicines for personal use that do not contain narcotic or psychotropic substances can be imported in reasonable quantities. Medicines with narcotic or psychotropic substances must be declared, and you must have a doctor's prescription (report) issued in the name of the person carrying the medicine.

Important: Georgia has very strict drug laws. A number of common over-the-counter medicines (for example, those with codeine or pseudoephedrine, as well as medicines for treating ADHD) are treated as narcotics here, and importing them without documents can carry serious liability. Check the composition of your medicines before travelling.

🐶 Pets

Animals may not be imported into Georgia without declaration. To bring a pet in legally, it must have a microchip or tattoo and a rabies vaccination (given no later than 21 days before the trip for a first vaccination). Deworming must be carried out no later than 5 days before departure.

Pregnant females and animals without documents recording the procedures carried out may not be transported. The maximum is 5 animals, for non-commercial purposes only.

🌸 Plants

Without a phytosanitary certificate you may import:

• up to 3 kg of citrus fruit;
• up to 5 shrubs and woody plants that are not seedlings;
• up to 5 potted plants;
• up to 5 kg of fresh vegetables and fruit;
• up to 20 cut flowers or branches;
• up to 2 kg of flower bulbs;
• up to 5 packets of seeds.

To import quince, apple, carnation, orchids, chrysanthemums and some other plants, you must obtain a permit from the National Food Agency.

❌ Prohibited without special permits:

• pornographic material;
• explosive and narcotic substances;
• rare species of animals and plants;
• weapons and ammunition (hunting weapons — with a Georgian licence);
• works of art, antiques and cultural property (export requires a permit from the Ministry of Culture).
