Import restrictions for Thailand 🇹🇭

General information

These rules are useful both for people carrying items across the border themselves and for those sending a parcel with a fellow traveller. The value of new goods in your baggage may not exceed THB 20,000 for tourists (for transit or a visa on arrival — THB 10,000) — otherwise you must fill out a customs declaration. Used personal items are not counted.

💰 Cash

You may bring in any amount of cash in any currency, but amounts exceeding the equivalent of USD 20,000 must be declared (the declaration can be filled out in English on arrival).

🚬 Tobacco and alcohol

Duty-free (persons aged 18 and over):

• alcohol — up to 1 L;
• tobacco — 200 cigarettes or 250 g of tobacco/cigars (one option, not all together).

Important: the cigarette limit is strictly enforced. For exceeding it — a fine 4 times the duty (in serious cases, criminal penalties are possible). If you are travelling in a group, do not carry the whole group's cigarettes in one bag — customs will treat them as belonging to one person and fine you.

🚭 E-cigarettes and vapes

The import of e-cigarettes, vapes, liquids and heat-not-burn devices (IQOS, glo, etc.) into Thailand is completely prohibited. The penalty is a large fine and up to imprisonment; tourists are detained and deported. Do not bring any devices, liquids or accessories.

🍕 Food

Food for personal use may be imported (not in hand baggage), with a total weight of up to 20 kg, with limits on individual groups, for example: milk and dairy products — 5 kg/L; coffee — 5 kg; instant coffee and tea — 1 kg; dried plants, vegetables and fruit — 5 kg; dried spices — 1 kg; other food — 10 kg. Animal and plant products are subject to quarantine control.

💊 Medicines

Medicines for personal use that do not contain narcotic or psychotropic substances may be imported in a quantity of no more than a 30-day supply. Medicines on the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) list may be imported only with a permit. The prescription must be issued in the name of the person carrying the medicine.

🐶 Pets

Animals may be imported only with a permit. The pet must be vaccinated against rabies and have an identification chip; a veterinary passport and health certificate are required. On arrival, you must go to the quarantine station and obtain a permit from the customs service's veterinarian.

🌸 Plants

Rare plants, as well as cannabis and its seeds, may not be imported. Importing cannabis from abroad is a serious offence. Plants and fruit are subject to quarantine control.

❌ Prohibited without special permits:

• narcotic substances;
• e-cigarettes, vapes and heat-not-burn devices;
• drones (registration required);
• weapons;
• certain Buddha images and other cultural property of special significance;
• pornographic material;
• goods made from rare plants or animals, etc.
