Import restrictions for Kazakhstan 🇰🇿

General information

These rules are useful both for people carrying items across the border themselves and for those sending a parcel with a fellow traveller. Kazakhstan is a member of the EAEU, so its limits are largely the same as Russia's.

When entering by land, you may import baggage worth up to EUR 500 and weighing up to 25 kg duty-free. By air — up to 50 kg and up to EUR 10,000. For amounts above the limit, a duty of 30% of the value of the excess portion is charged, but not less than EUR 4 per 1 kg of the excess weight.

The weight and value limits apply only to new items bought abroad and do not apply to used personal belongings or to alcohol. To save time at the border, you can fill out a passenger customs declaration form in advance.

💰 Cash

Cash and traveller's cheques up to USD 10,000 (or the equivalent) do not need to be declared; funds in bank accounts are not counted. Amounts over USD 10,000 must be declared. For amounts over USD 100,000, you will need to provide documents confirming the lawful origin of the funds.

🍷 Tobacco and alcohol

You may import up to 3 litres of alcohol (over 0.5%) duty-free. For the volume between 3 and 5 litres — a duty of EUR 10 per litre over the limit; more than 5 litres may not be imported.

Tobacco products — duty-free within the limit:

• up to 200 cigarettes;
• up to 50 cigars or cigarillos;
• up to 200 tobacco sticks;
• up to 250 g of tobacco;
• or an assortment weighing no more than 250 g in total.

💻 Personal items

Personal items (clothing, footwear, headwear, leisure gear, etc.) are carried duty-free provided that you cross the border no more than once a month, the items show signs of use and are not in factory packaging.

Some goods only in limited quantities (per person):

• fur items — 1 of each type (3 fur coats are not allowed, but 1 fur coat, 1 collar and 1 hat are);
• smartphones — 2;
• laptops — 1;
• jewellery — up to 5 items;
• bicycles — 1;
• baby strollers — 1.

🍕 Food

Without duties or certificates, you may only import ready-to-eat products in factory packaging (raw meat or fish — not allowed, but sausage — allowed). Up to 5 kg of animal products and up to 5 kg of plant products are permitted.

💊 Medicines

Medicines for personal use that do not contain narcotic or psychotropic substances are imported within the general limits for personal-use goods.

Medicines containing narcotic or psychotropic substances must be declared, with a certified copy of the prescription issued in the name of the person carrying the medicine.

Important for senders: such medicines must be declared by the person who will take them; you may not carry them on behalf of another person.

🐶 Pets

You may import up to 2 cats and dogs without declaration. The animals must have a veterinary passport with vaccination records and a record of a clinical examination carried out no earlier than 2 weeks before the trip.

🌸 Plants

To transport seedlings, seeds and other plant products that are not ready food, a quarantine certificate is required.

❌ Prohibited without special permits:

• explosive and narcotic substances;
• Red Book (endangered) plants and animals;
• weapons and ammunition;
• cultural property more than 50 years old, etc.
