Import restrictions for Portugal 🇵🇹

General information

These rules are useful both for people carrying items across the border themselves and for those sending a parcel with a fellow traveller. Portugal is a member of the EU, so common rules apply for entry from outside the EU. The value of goods in your baggage may not exceed EUR 430 (entering by air or sea) or EUR 300 (by land). For persons under 15, the limit is EUR 150. If the limit is exceeded, the goods must be declared.

💰 Cash

Amounts up to EUR 10,000 (or the equivalent) do not need to be declared. If the limit is exceeded, you must fill out a declaration on paper or electronically.

🚬 Tobacco

Duty-free — one option or a proportional combination:

• 200 cigarettes;
• 100 cigarillos;
• 50 cigars;
• 250 g of tobacco.

🍷 Alcohol

• 1 L of spirits (over 22%) or 2 L of low-alcohol drinks (up to 22%);
• 4 L of still wine;
• 16 L of beer.

🍕 Food

The import of fresh plant products, as well as meat and dairy products, from non-EU countries is prohibited. Baby food and pet food up to 2 kg are allowed if they are required for medical reasons.

💊 Medicines

Medicines are imported for personal use. For prescription medicines you need a prescription issued in the name of the person carrying the medicine; for products with narcotic or psychotropic substances, medical confirmation is additionally required (within the Schengen area — the relevant certificate).

🐶 Pets

You may import dogs, cats and ferrets. The animal must have a microchip (or tattoo), a veterinary passport/certificate and a valid rabies vaccination. For a pet from a third country not on the EU's list of rabies-controlled countries, a rabies antibody test is additionally required (it is not needed for the USA, Canada, Japan and a number of other countries — it depends on the country of departure).

🌸 Plants

Rare (protected) plants may not be imported. For most plants, their seeds and seedlings, a phytosanitary certificate is required.

❌ Prohibited without special permits:

• antiques and items of historical value;
• pornographic material;
• narcotic substances;
• toxic, poisonous and radioactive materials;
• weapons, etc.
